The Civic was built as an ‘atmospheric’ theatre - a type of cinema fashionable in the 1920s and extravagantly designed to evoke a sense of the outdoors. It is one of the few remaining atmospheric cinemas in the world, and is the last remaining in the Southern Hemisphere.
